HUMN 222
While living in Florence, the key city of the Renaissance and visiting related sites in Italy, students are introduced to the broad outlines of the intellectual and cultural history of the West, from the Renaissance and Reformation of the 15th and 16th centuries to the end of the 20th century. In addition to covering major historical events, figures, and cultural developments of this period, the course will give particular attention to religion and philosophy, politics, literature, architecture, music, and art. Students will develop an appreciation of the “big questions” that have occupied the West for the past 600 years; develop an appreciation of historical and critical perspective in the study of culture; and sharpen their reading, critical thinking, writing, note taking, web searching, and study skills. This is an approved General Education course.
CSULA - Noelle ENGL 2310
Analysis and interpretation of dominant myths in representative works of world fiction, drama and poetry; critical compositions. Mythology is the study of the legends about the origins and history of a people, their deities, ancestors and heroes. This course will focus on examining specifically Italian/Roman mythology and legends. Myth and legends define our sense of society as well as ourselves. ENGL 2310 tends to differ from other lower division English humanities courses in its greater emphasis on the psychological motifs and patterns of symbolic narration that are characteristic of most world cultures. The stories of the gods, legendary heroes and myths of the Italian tradition have provided the fountainhead for literature and the arts in the service of religious and political imagery down to the present. The emphasis will be primarily literary, both ancient and modern, with classic readings of such writers as Virgil and Dante, (noting, in passing, the influence upon later literature). Such writers documented the mythological heritage of the ancient Mediterranean to give us such long-lasting and iconic figures as Aeneas, Arcadia, Fortunate and Janus. The visual depiction of these myths will also be studied alongside more modern legends.
A very important constituent is looking at the very present, local Italian myths/legends alongside the ancient ones that surround us in the city of Florence, Italy. The undisputed charm of the city of Florence comes from the fact that it has the highest concentration of works of art per square kilometers in any city, and these works are often based on historical accounts. Like the Legend of Rifrullo Del Diavolo” near Florence’s Duomo or the bronze sculpture by Cellini in the Piazza della Signoria. These simple stories have been passed down to us over many centuries. The secrets that hide in Florence make it clearly a city where mythology, historiography and mystery are often intertwined, creating intrigue on every corner. We will explore such intrigue through classic myths and legends, a series of short stories, and of course local field trips to fountains, piazzas, statues, and museums in Florence.
